In March of this year Jessica’s Culinary Arts teacher and I connected; I offered to share what I had learned about coffee with her classes. On Friday, April 28th, I spent the day chatting with the Culinary Arts students. They learned about the history, geography, growing, processing, roasting, and drinking of coffee. Most of our time was structured around a PowerPoint presentation I had created; in addition we had pop quizzes with prizes and a high-contrast coffee tasting.
Our coffee tasting included Breakfast Blend and Verona, two very different coffees. After the initial tasting I cranked up the contrast by having each student eat a chocolate covered caramel. Then next we tried Verona again. "Wow." "This is really good." "I didn’t know coffee could taste like this!" Then the Breakfast Blend. "Whoa." "Yuck." "What happened?" The chocolate covered caramel is not a good food pairing for the Breakfast Blend, which they discovered.
I think the students all learned some coffee facts and trivia; they all learned a new appreciation for coffee, too.
